Unsolicited feedback

Unsolicited advice is not a POV

January 19, 2026

Just because they have something to say, doesn’t mean you should listen.

Let’s talk about unsolicited advice; the universal language of the internet.

You know the type. You’re working on something you’re proud of. You post it, mention it, or maybe you’re just thinking about it out loud—and someone swoops in:

  • “Have you considered doing it this way?”
  • “This isn’t how I would’ve approached it.”
  • “Just my two cents…”

Spoiler alert: No one asked for your two cents.

I’ve learned this the hard way. I’ve received unsolicited feedback that left me second-guessing work I had poured months into. I’ve had people with zero context—and even less relevant experience—tell me how I should run a brand, lead a team, or launch a campaign.

And for a second? I’d start to believe them. Until I remembered: Not all advice is created equal.

The Difference Between Noise and Insight

Opinions are everywhere. Everyone has one—especially the people who shouldn’t. However, a real point of view (POV) is earned. It comes from experience. From building, failing, getting back up, and doing it again. It doesn’t come from watching a TED Talk and “forming a vibe.”

So, when someone offers unsolicited advice, ask yourself these three questions:

  1. Context: Do they actually know my goals, my audience, or the challenges I’m facing?
  2. Credibility: Have they done what I’m trying to do—and done it well?
  3. Intent: Are they adding clarity… or just noise in a confident tone?

Unsolicited advice often says more about the person giving it than it does about your work.

A Note to the Commentators

If you find yourself frequently giving advice, be honest about whether it’s rooted in your lived experience or if you’re just offering commentary from the sidelines. There is a massive difference between the two.

And if you’ve been holding back your actual POV because you’re worried it’s not “popular” or “palatable”? Let it go. Your perspective has power—but only if you let people hear it.

Difference Between Noise and Insight

The Bottom Line

  • Not all feedback deserves your energy.
  • Not every opinion is an insight.
  • Not everyone who speaks should be handed a mic.

Trust your instincts. Know your source. And remember—if they didn’t build it, they don’t get to break it down.

Now go do the thing. Loud opinions or not.
