My Post-Facial Monster Face & The Long Game of Perspective

Today, after months of procrastination, I finally got one of those face treatments—you know the kind where your skin is stripped down to the molecular level, and you look exactly like a monster who should be hiding under a bridge. Naturally, right after that… I had to go to the supermarket.

And of course, who do I run into while navigating the produce aisle looking like a dermatological disaster? My oldest son’s third-grade teacher.

It was lovely to reconnect—but the moment instantly reminded me of two important realities:

1. The Chaos of Early Perspective

First, the absurdity of time. How long ago was third grade? Long enough for my entire perspective to shift.

Back then, every small detail felt like a high-stakes decision. Every parent knows that anxiety:
Did I pack the right lunch?
Is this test going to define his future?

2. The Evolution of a Brand Leader

This same pattern is exactly what I see in brand leaders every day.

At the beginning—whether you’re a new parent or launching a brand—you obsess over tactical details:

  • A single negative comment on Instagram feels catastrophic
  • A small drop in SEO ranking feels like failure
  • Minor setbacks feel like they threaten the entire business

You treat every moment like it’s a final exam.

But over time—through parenting and building The Darl—I’ve learned something critical:

The things that feel urgent today often become irrelevant tomorrow.

Mature leadership isn’t about avoiding every small problem. It’s about building systemic resilience.

  • Don’t obsess over temporary follower drops
  • Focus on LTV (Lifetime Value) and retained revenue
  • Don’t micromanage—build systems that absorb mistakes

True leadership means replacing short-term anxiety with long-term clarity.

What really matters in 2026—your foundation, efficiency, and authority—can’t be built overnight. And they’re not shaken by small, everyday disruptions.

Even the ones that happen in the produce aisle… when you look like a monster.
