Why I’m ignoring the Pope (and you should too) 🕊️

I once sat across from a “Global Guru” at a high-level mastermind dinner. This man had millions of followers, several private jets, and a tan that suggested he hadn’t seen a cloud since 2012.

He leaned in, looked me dead in the eye, and told me that the only way to grow my agency was to fire my entire creative team and replace them with a specific, ultra-cheap outsourcing firm he just happened to own.

In that moment, he had all the “status” in the world. He was the “Pope” of that particular business circle. But as I listened to him, my internal BS Detector started screaming. His advice was terrible. It ignored my values, my team’s talent, and the actual needs of my clients. It was high-status, expensive, gold-plated garbage.

Here is the truth we often forget: Bad advice is still bad advice, even if it comes from the Pope.

The “Pedestal” Trap

We have this weird habit in business of assuming that because someone is successful in one area, they are an oracle in every area.

We listen to the tech billionaire talk about marriage. We listen to the famous actress talk about clinical nutrition. And in marketing, we listen to the “Industry Giant” tell us how to run our boutique brand, even though they haven’t touched a real campaign since the era of billboard-only advertising.

  • The Halo Effect: We see the “Pope-like” status and we turn off our brains. We think, “Well, they have a jet, so they must be right about my Instagram strategy.”
  • The Ego Shortcut: It’s easier to follow a “Guru” than it is to do the hard work of looking at your own data.
  • The Silent Sabotage: When you follow bad advice from a high-status source, you feel “safe” even while your brand is sinking. You can say, “But the expert told me to do it!”

I’ve always said that your website is the heart of your brand. If someone—no matter how famous they are—tells you to do something that stops that heart from beating, you have to have the courage to say “no.”

True authority isn’t about how many followers you have; it’s about understanding the logic of the ecosystem you’re playing in.

If the “Pope” of your industry tells you that you don’t need to worry about your website performance because “vibe is everything,” they are wrong. If a celebrity founder tells you to “just go viral” without a foundation in place, they are giving you a map to a cliff.

The Reality Check: A fancy title doesn’t make a bad idea good. It just makes it louder.

Waking Up Your Instincts

At the end of the day, you are the Architect of your brand. You are the one who has to live with the results when the “Guru” moves on to their next dinner party.

Authenticity in leadership means having the humility to listen to everyone, but the wisdom to follow almost no one until you’ve checked the “math.” Does the advice make sense for your heart? Does it align with your shared vocabulary with your customers?

If the answer is “no,” then it doesn’t matter if the advice was whispered by a saint or shouted by a billionaire. It’s still just noise.

The Mirror Test

Take a look at the “best” piece of advice you’ve received lately.

Are you following it because it’s actually working, or are you following it because you’re intimidated by the person who gave it to you? It’s time to stop looking at the person’s pedestals and start looking at their “math.”
